The chairman of National Freedom Front, Mr. Wimal Weerawansa (MP) said that the opposition presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka’s plan to sit on the executive presidential chair by hook or crook died a natural death with the astounding victory of  President Mahinda Rajapaksha.

He expressed those views in the press briefing held today (29) at the party Head Quarters at Battaramulla, Colombo.  He further said that “ the answers have been found to the question as to why Sarath Fonseka booked more than 70 rooms between 5.00 pm and 6.00pm on the polling day (26th January)  in the Taj Samudra and Cinnamon Lake hotels in Colombo. This was revealed by the 9 army deserters who were taken into custody by the military police.

Those soldiers had initially provided security to Fonseka. But he had subsequently made a fake compliant to the police alleging that they had run away with their firearms and thereby had obtained another 9 soldiers for his security. However now it is found that Fonseka had spent the night in the Cinnamon Lake hotel with those 9 soldiers who were alleged to have run away and with another group of army deserters. Also it is now revealed that he had sent a large number of army deserters to other districts with firearms”.

Mr. Weerawansa further said that “before it is revealed what their objective of staying in the hotel with a large number of army deserters, it is appropriate to convince the media of the back-ground of this gruesome plan. A few days prior to the polling day, an election review report had been released by the UNP’s “Sirikotha” head office. In that report it had predicted that Sarath Fonseka could poll 50.81% votes maximum; that is  5,462, 237 votes . Further that report had mentioned that he would poll three hundred thousand votes from Jaffna district. On these findings, they believed that Fonseka would poll either 50% or 49%. On this basis, Fonseka had decided that even if he won or lost by a slender margin, power should be grabbed and for that purpose an insidious conspiracy was designed. According to this conspiracy, they had planned to assassinate the President, his family members and the officers in the presidential secretariat during the time while poll results were being announced. The 70 rooms had been booked to house those army deserters who were to carry our that gruesome assassination plan” said Mr. Weerawansa.

“However those vicious gang driven by acute hatred had to give up their plan when they understood that  President Mahinda Rajapaksha was to win the election with more than 1.8 million votes. From the very beginning of election campaign they were paranoid and “day dreaming”  about their “possible win”. This is further evident from the fact that on the polling day (26) the secretary to the former president, Mr. Kusumchandra Balapatabandi had called an assistant secretary in the Presidential Secretariat and had informed her to make arrangements for Fonseka’s Oaths taking ceremony on the following day”, said Mr. Weerawansa.

Mr. Weerawansa further said  that in the past, Ehalepola Adhikaram pleaded with the British imperialists- rulers to make him the Crown King in the Kandyan Kingdom.  In the same manner,  Saratha Fonseka now entreats and beseeches the imperialists  saying “ Oh, gentlemen please look at my position and enthrone me”. The famous “Hindu” news paper too has referred to this analogy”, said Mr. Weerawansa.

In this context, we request the Government to bring this man and his gang who were involved in that murderous plan before the law.
